Shopping Online? Beware of Porch Pirates

Porch Pirates stealing pakages delivered to homes after online orderingBurglars no longer have to bother to break into your home. Instead they are turning to “Porch Pirating” where they steal delivered packages from your doorstep or porch. Often, they follow delivery trucks and go right in and remove packages from prime targets as soon as they arrive. They prefer to strike during daytime hours since fewer residents are at home during that time. So how can you avoid becoming a Porch Pirate’s victim? Here are some tips to protect your purchases.

  • Often the vendor will offer you the option to choose a specific delivery time. Then you can arrange a time when you’ll be available to receive the delivery.
  • When ordering online from a large retailer, take advantage of the offer to pick up your package from a local branch store at your convenience instead of having it delivered to your home.
  • Whenever possible, arrange to have deliveries made to a location such as a relative’s house or the home of a neighbor so that they can be received in person.
  • If you must have a package delivered to your home, set up delivery alerts to notify you by phone, text or e-mail at the time the delivery is made. If you cannot accept delivery when you receive the alert, then you can immediately contact a trusted neighbor who can retrieve the package from your porch before any harm can come to it.
  • Arrange for a signature confirmation of delivery so that a package will not be left when no one is home to sign for it. At the same time, consider providing delivery instructions to leave the item at an out-of-sight location such as a back porch.
  • Delivery companies are beginning to offer local pick-up facilities where you can arrange to have your package held until you can pick it up. This is especially helpful if you will be receiving many deliveries at once or something that is exceptionally large or heavy.
